Alprazolam (Xanax) and diazepam (Valium), the two most prescribed benzodiazepine anxiolytics in the United States, have potential for addictive use. The Drug Abuse Warning Network (DAWN) indicates they are the most mentioned benzodiazepines, and the National Household Survey indicates significant abuse of tranquilizers. Both drugs are rapidly absorbed and enter the brain tissue rapidly, leading to reinforcement. Alprazolam has a shorter half-life, which may lead to more withdrawal symptoms than diazepam. In experimental conditions, they are among the most reinforcing benzodiazepines. Each causes a withdrawal syndrome, but alprazolam withdrawal may be more severe and may occur after a shorter period of use. Adverse effects from their use are said to be rare, yet subtle negative consequences may be seen with some regularity.

Alprazolam deserves special caution because of its great popularity, reinforcing capabilities, and relatively severe withdrawal syndrome.

It’s a schedule 4 medication. So it is less addicting than schedules 1,2, and 3. Schedule ones are LSD, Heroine. Schedule 2 is morphine, fentanyl and like medications. Schedule 3 is vicodin, percocet and similar drugs. So it is addicting but less addicting than the mentioned drugs.

  • mixedmediaman says:

Xanax can be addictive. Dosage taken, Length of time drug is
taken for, and individual response to benzodiazepines, should
all be factored in. Each person has different tolerance, and
what may cause dependence to Xanax in one person, may
be a acceptable dosage for another. The longer the drug stays
in your body, the less likely you are to have sudden rebound
withdrawal symptoms. If you take any medication for more
than two weeks, it’s best to not discontinue Xanax abruptly.
Anxiety, panic attacks, and insomnia may occur in some
cases, when Xanax has been discontinued suddenly, after
being taken in high doses and extended time periods.

  • amelia says:
