Are There Any Clinical Trials for Adults With Tourette’s in the Indianapolis-Bloomington Area?

Question by Voi-la Intruder: Are there any clinical trials for adults with Tourette’s in the Indianapolis-Bloomington area?
I have a version of this and would like to see if I can participate in a trial for medication or other methods of lessening tics.

With Tourette syndrome, there are medication treatments– dopamine agonist drugs (antipsychotics) sedatives, and some types of anticonvulsants. Unfortuantely, there is not one drug on the market (especially in these types of drugs!) that do not have potential side effects. Antipsychotics are known for a variety of potentially devastating side effects, sedatives for their addictive potential, and anticonvulsants for other various effects.

How do I know this? I have Tourette’s myself, and have researched treatments to the point of exhaustion.

Now, permanent side effects or dangerous side effects are very rare, but they do happen to people. I look back after takign all those medicines, and I don’t regret trying them. That’s all my doctors knew to do after behavioral therapy did not help me.

Now, if you have disabing tics that haven’t improved with conventional treatments of behavioral therapy and medications, you may qualify for one of two treatments (experimental) rTMS (look up Yale Child Study Center, Tourette’s) or even a type of brain surgery, though this is obviously a last resort for people whose tics are dangerous.

The best I know to tell you, go to Yale Child Study Center Tourette’s site, it’s the site where you can find contact info for several very accomplished doctors who specialize in Tourette Syndrome.

Also, contacting Tourette Syndrome Association is a good idea. They can give you information about how to find a qulaified doctor.

Good Luck!
