How Does a Cop Know You Don’t Have a Seat Belt on in the Middle of the Night?!?

Question by : How does a cop know you don’t have a seat belt on in the middle of the night?!?
About two months ago I was driving a beat-up Buick Century around 1am in the city of Indianapolis. I had to be going around 55mph. A cop pulls me over and says I’m getting a seatbelt ticket. My question is how could he have possibly seen that I didn’t have a seatbelt on? The thing that really irked me was I had just taken it off to find something in my backseat. I think I was being followed because my car looked like a “drug” car. I get pulled over at least once a month. The excuse most of the cops use is that my backtail light is busted out. They pull me over even when I have red tape covering it. Do you guys think that it was just by the cops convenience that I didn’t have a seatbelt on? Because I don’t see HOW he could have seen inside my car at 1am. I think he was looking for an excuse to pull me over. BTW, don’t respond if you’re just going to say it serves me right that I got one or that I was disobeying the law, etc. I already KNOW this.
Hey Mac guess what?! I DID pull over to look. I just forgot to put it back on. Also, I’m not endangering ANYONE by me not putting on MY seatbelt. Jerk off.
The whole POINT I was trying to make was that the cop had to be following me BEFORE he could see that I forgot to fasten my belt back. I’m totally aware that I was “breaking the law” or whatever but that wasn’t the point. My car was being profiled.

I think they just pull people over at random…I got pulled over for not having mine on once however i did have my seat belt on.

  • juventus-rox says:

Maybe you should have kept your seatbelt on, pulled over then unbuckled it and then look for whatever in your back seat. But anyways, the cop was probaly just an anal jerk who felt like pulling you over for no reason THEN he saw you wernt wearin a seat belt. lol

  • A-Wall says:

in most cities cops are instructed not to pull someone over for not having a seatbelt off, and you can only get a ticket if you have it off when they pull you over for somthing else, maybe he pulled you over becuase you were swerving or somthing, and forgot to ask you about that, becuase he was too busy giving you a ticket, IDK, some cops just arn’t smart, some are, there just normal people, that take your money

    Sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
Did you have one on or didn’t you?
It was a good question though.

I got a similar “warning” from a cop driving thru the Central State Hospital property in Indy. He said he could tell but I still don’t know how! I agree with the comment about the random pulling over for seatbelts and searches.

  • Mac Boswell says:

maybe cause you was looking in the back seat and driving? you said it yourself you had to take it of to look.
That’s not safe. Don’t care about you. but the poeple your driving around shouldn’t be endangered by your thoughtless actions.

  • des0ne says:

He probably pulled you over and then saw the seat belt. Why didnt you put your seat belt on when you saw the blues?

  • JDub1933 says:

depending on the amount of light, the position of his lights entering your vehicle and the difference between your shirt and the seat belt its is quite possible that someone could make that judgement.

however what alot of people dont know is that police have a quota for each month, generally the last week of a month is where cops crack down on stupid offences that they would normally ignore like slightly speeding or burnt out lights.

given that your car looks like a “drug car” and you have a light taped up is only added incentive for them.

  • Skipper says:

MOST cops give you that reason? How many times are you going to get pulled over before you take off the tape and get a lens cover?

  • scorch_22 says:

Cops profile all the time. I had one cop use the excuse that my rear license plate light was out, one problem when he turned on his lights he was in front of me not behind me…. If it isn’t the seatbelt they use as an excuse its just something else. Basically half the laws that cops use are designed for one purpose: an excuse to pull over suspicious cars. If they are going to use the laws illegally anyway, they might as well just allow cops to pull people over without having an excuse, that way my police record wouldn’t show a huge number of warnings that I didn’t really deserve.

  • AlaskaMusher says:

Most modern police vehicles are equipped with vehicle warning light sensors. This technology allows them to tell what warning lights are on or come on your vehicle’s dashboard.

So for instance the officer can tell if your cruise control is on or if your “check engine” light is on so he can ticket you for driving an unsafe vehicle. And of course he can tell if your selt belt not fastened light is on.

P.S. this still works if the warning light bulb is burned out as it senses the electrical impulses.

  • CGIV76 says:

When following another vehicle, it is very easy to see the position of the seat belt on the driver (most of the time). If it’s on a 45 degree, you’re wearing it. If you can’t see it crossing your body, you’re not wearing it.

  • old fuzz says:

A Buick Century is a “drug car” in Indianapolis?? Man, that is sad. . .

Seriously, it does depend on where the cop was when you drove by. If he was approaching in the other lane, he can see thru the front windshield or thru the side window as you went past. If he was following you, he could see if the top strap was crossing from the door pillar to your shoulder. But the deciding factor was that he saw you did not have the belt on when he walked up to your door.

  • spag says:

Where’s the issue? He stopped you for no seatbelt and you did NOT have it on. It’s very easy to see if the driver is wearing a seatbelt from behind. The red tape over the tail light does not excuse you from getting a ticket for a broken tail light. That’s why they keep pulling you over.

provide links to these studies? where these scientists have proven these mental illnesses to be false. last time i checked, most of these mental illnesses can be witnessed by using a ct scan of the brain and which neurons are firing because of the neurotransmitters being sent across synapses. maybe it’s time for you to do some homework before you say things are fact

  • ParabolH says:

“If you use amphetamines everyday, even if you don’t get intoxicated in anyway. Then your a drug addict.”…by your logic, everyone who drinks? a beer once a day is an alcoholic. everyone who eats every day is a binge eater. everyone who showers every day is a clean freak. your logic is that if you do something everyday you are automatically the worst stigma attached to that action. you seem to comment on this video a lot. by your logic you spend all your time here

  • ParabolH says:

and by the way, if you’re going to call people incompetent morons, at least use proper grammar such as you’re, and doesn’t, their. frankly i can work out for 3 hours, burn over 600 calories, and still can’t focus on things for more than an hour. does that make me over hyper too? or am i just a stellar athlete and never tire out. if you’re going to make insults at people for mental illness,? which i am assuming you don’t have, back it up with facts

  • ParabolH says:

sorry but i have ADHD and i hold over a 3.0 GPA in college. that doesnt make me an incompetent moron. but when a single topic in class? leads to 7 different mental tangents and you miss out on important discussions because of that, it is a problem. would you rather me drink 4 red bulls every day so that i can concentrate? then people would get heart problems from red bull and it would be pulled off the shelves. or any energy drink for that matter. your pick…

  • ParabolH says:

i agree.? got prescribed XR 15mg adderall today and had to go to 5 pharmicies to get a one month script filled. its ridiculous. i got this script to help me come off 3 different medications that after 3 years might not even be working, and I am being told the medication i need so i dont get sick from weening off the original medications isnt available. such a shame kids are such little selfish shits who pretend to have this condition. trust me having adhd is a curse

  • ParabolH says:

because the people that are abusing these pills who actually dont need the medications are creating a shortage for those who actually need this medication. i had a suicide attempt about a month ago, and the psychiatrist i am seeing is weening me off of all meds i am on now and i was prescribed adderall to supplement coming off taking ritalin and klonapin 3 times a day. but i had to go to 5 pharmicies.? this is to get off meds ive been using for 3 years and arent working.

  • imanerd36 says:

In my experience, even if you are diagnosed with ADHD (which was way, way longer and harder than what the woman in the video said [required several sessions with a psychiatrist, several long? questioners that you, your parents, and your teachers fill out, ect.]), psychiatrists will almost always they will start you on Strattera (a non-stimulant) and do that for over 6 months before they will even consider a stimulant.
